Patent rights extension rejected

Patent holders cannot extract royalties from companies after the initial sale of their technology, the US Supreme Court ruled yesterday, delivering a big victory for manufacturers who combine a variety of patented components.

In a unanimous decision, the court rejected a claim by South Korea's LG Electronics that its patent rights extended after it licensed technology to Intel and should cover all subsequent uses of LG products.
