Irish given ‘wake-up call’ over slowdown

Ireland’s finance minister on Tuesday hinted at spending cuts after the main economic think-tank predicted the first fall in output since 1983.

Brian Lenihan described the report by the Economic Social Research Institute as a “wake-up call”, adding: “If we take the necessary corrective action we will put our economy on a sustainable path for the future. When international conditions improve we will be in a position to take advantage.”
