Severn Trent escapes record fine

Severn Trent on Tuesday escaped a record fine for deliberately misreporting water leakage levels after a judge refused to impose a regulatory-style penalty that could have cost the company tens of millions of pounds.

The second biggest water company was facing an unlimited fine after pleading guilty to supplying Ofwat, the industry regulator, with false leakage estimates between 2000 and 2002.
