The Fortis brand, once a symbol of Belgium’s ambitions in the realm of international banking, is set to disappear in a striking sign of the soured fortunes of the country’s financial industry.

It is not only Fortis whose brand has suffered: the ambitions of Brussels’s financials have crumbled in recent months, as all three main banks have been the subject of repeated bail-outs, unprecedented writedowns and collapsing share prices.
