Energy at heart of EU bid to open markets

The European Commission on Tuesday ordered energy giants to break their grip on domestic markets as part of a sweeping assault on protectionism within the European Union.

France, Spain and Italy were among those countries that faced the harshest criticism in legal action designed to force a fully competitive internal energy market. The move could affect companies such as EDF, Gaz de France, Gas Natural of Spain and Enel of Italy hardest.
