Putin dismisses US missile shield plan

The US on Friday vowed to plough ahead with plans to build a controversial missile shield in Europe despite Russian threats to take retaliatory measures to “neutralise” the system.

During a high-level visit to Moscow, Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, and Condoleezza Rice, secretary of state, appeared to make little progress in easing Russian concerns over the plans to place 10 missile interceptors in Poland and a radar in the Czech Republic.
