Ministers set for defeat over private sector role in NHS

Ministers are braced for a bloody nose this week at the hands of trade union opponents of private sector involvement in the National Health Service.

Patricia Hewitt, health secretary, will try to find a compromise by recognising the unease of NHS staff at the pace and direction of reform and by promising what aides describe as a "better mechanism for dialogue".
