Barack Obama promised a “new dawn of American leadership” after he was elected the first African-American president of the US amid international acclaim and record turnout on Tuesday.
As the 47-year-old president-elect heralded an era of change in his victory speech, he warned the country of sacrifices and difficulties ahead. Congressional Democrats increased their majorities, although they appeared unlikely to secure a fillibuster-proof majority in the Senate.
