Bertelsmann doubts Five can survive alone

Five, the struggling commercial broadcaster, is “not sustainable” in its current form and the strategy of its parent company is predicated on a merger with other UK television businesses such as Channel 4 or even ITV, a senior executive at the parent group said on Tuesday.

Thomas Rabe, chief financial officer of Bertelsmann, said the group’s RTL division, Five’s owner, was not interested in buying ITV.
