Counting cost of antiwar mood in Newcastle

Labour's difficulties were highlighted last night in Newcastle Central where Jim Cousins saw his majority cut, in spite of his opposition to the war in Iraq.

Mr Cousins' 2001 majority of 11,605 over the Liberal Democrats was reduced to 3,982. The Labour election campaign was given a poignant reminder this week of the human cost of the Iraq war this week, and this did much to hurt Labour's vote.
