Bob Diamond, chief executive of Barclays Capital, this week launched an aggressive charm offensive to entice some of Lehman Brothers’ star investment bankers in Europe to join his firm.

Mr Diamond personally called five key Lehman bankers, inviting them to join him for a private dinner last Wednesday at Barclays’ London headquarters in Canary Wharf. However, all five declined the invitation.
