Lowe’s sees signs of US consumer revival

Lowe’s on Monday reported a decline in first-quarter profits, but the home-improvement retailer’s chief executive suggested that improving consumer confidence and optimistic signs from the housing market could signal that the worst of the recession was over.

The cautiously upbeat assessment came as the retailer reported a fall in first-quarter profits of more than a fifth and a 7 per cent decline in like-for-like sales.
