The main candidates’ performance has been dismal

On Sunday France will vote in the first round to select the two finalists for the presidency in a campaign that has been fascinating but ultimately frustrating.

Fascinating: because of the prospect of a new generation at last acceding to power and the semblance of a real debate and a genuine choice between distinctive visions of the future for a country that desperately needs one. Frustrating: because that has turned out to be a mirage – at least for now.
