Britons consider it unseemly to talk about their own pay, but fine to talk about others’. MPs have been subjected to a pitchfork rebellion, as public (and media) get stuck into how much they earn.
Citizens have the right to know what their representatives get paid, just as they have the right to demand their taxes are well spent. But it would be a pity if the righteous anger of the great British public over MPs’ pay became the means by which their check on an overmighty executive was further undermined.
