German billionaire makes plea for government bail-out

Adolf Merckle, the German billionaire who suffered a large loss after betting on a falling Volkswagen share price, has turned to the government for help in what could be one of the first non-banking state bail-outs in Germany since the start of the financial crisis.

Mr Merckle, Germany's fifth-richest person, is sounding out the state of Baden-Württemberg about the possibility of obtaining a state guarantee.
