Smurfit Kappa, Europe’s leading supplier of corrugated packaging, has thrown down a gauntlet to customers and competitors by imposing a 25 per cent price rise from September.

Gary McGann, chief executive, said Smurfit was taking a lead in attempting to re-establish profitability in the sector, which has been hard hit by falling demand that has forced many rivals to operate at a loss.
