Proposed financial agency draws fire in House

The Obama administration’s proposal for a new Consumer Financial Protection Agency risks being watered down by lawmakers in Congress after an intense lobbying effort from banks.

The CFPA would crack down on misselling of products such as mortgages and credit cards. But this has led to concerns in the financial industry about a new layer of regulation and the potential for conflicts between the agency and existing regulators charged with safeguarding the soundness of institutions.
