Rugby has had to grow up fast in recent years. With professional status coming relatively late to the game, in 1995, the sport’s administrators have had to cope with its impact at roughly the same time that globalisation and new broadcasting technologies have transformed the finances of sport as a whole.
Not even a competition as venerable and steeped in tradition as the RBS Six Nations has been able to sidestep the rapid pace of change. Yet few sports tournaments, new or old, are thriving more conspicuously in the new climate.
