Sprint cycling record adds lustre to gold

Track cycling was Great Britain’s banker for gold at these Olympics, and the squad on Friday made a scintillating start to their medal quest.

The men’s sprint team began the day with a world record and ended it clutching gold medals. The performance by Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny and Jamie Staff was “a big thing for us”, as Hoy explained afterwards, having defeated France, the world champions and favourites.
