As Alistair Darling entered the plush Treasury buildings in 1 Horse Guards Road on Thursday, it was in the reassuring knowledge that he will not be called upon to tackle a looming economic crisis.

Just like Gordon Brown 10 years ago, his economic inheritance appears sound. The Treasury has had many problems hitting its fiscal forecasts this decade, but with the aid of repeated tax increases, a fiscal crisis has been avoided.
