Ever since its inception in 1997 as the first all-electronic US stock market, the upstart Archipelago exchange's main mission has been to win market share in blue chip stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

But it was a hard task due to intense competition from rivals including Nasdaq, making Archipelago vulnerable to price competition in the low-margin equities trading business.
