It may be no larger than the US state of Connecticut, with a population of only 800,000 people, most of them expatriates, but when it comes to political influence, Qatar has stretched its tentacles far beyond its borders.

With diplomatic savvy and little fear of provoking controversy, the emirate has followed a non-conformist foreign policy that has been crucial to its protection but has rattled neighbours and confused allies.
