Baghdad takes on control of militias

The Baghdad government has begun assuming control of the US-backed armed groups that have been credited with helping to curtail violence in the country, in a high-stakes test for the US strategy to pacify Iraq.

Iraqi authorities officially took command yesterday of about 54,000 members of the Sons of Iraq or Awakening Councils in Baghdad. US officials say they will transfer authority over the remaining members as conditions permit.
