France to hasten economic reforms

France’s parliament has this week adopted economic reforms designed to deregulate the retail industry, establish an independent competition authority, and help companies to skirt the statutory 35-hour working week.

The legislative measures cap a burst of activity by President Nicolas Sarkozy ahead of the summer break. The French leader, who on Friday receives Barack Obama, the US Democratic presidential candidate, this week secured backing for constitutional reforms.
