EU decision sees narrower window for Microsoft

To hear Microsoft executives tell it, the world’s biggest software company has already made big concessions in opening up its Windows desktop software stronghold. That reflects one of the commercial realities that the technology industry at large has faced with the coming of the internet: a greater demand from customers for the various technologies they buy to work together better.

Rivals, however, have long argued that these concessions have been half-hearted, dilatory and ultimately ineffective.
