US cautiously welcomes Berlin trade plans

US officials yesterday cautiously welcomed proposals from Angela Merkel, German chancellor, to reinvigorate transatlantic trade relations, describing the improvement of such ties as a "priority" for Washington.

Speaking ahead of Ms Merkel's arrival in Washington on Thursday for talks with President George W. Bush, a US official said: "We await with interest the German government's recommendations on how to enhance the already vibrant transatlantic economic relationship."
