Times are hard at the Cafeteria Snack Bar, one of a handful of cafes, bars and restaurants still open past the end of the season in Punta del Este, Uruguay’s prime tourist spot.
“It’s not economic to stay open all year but we do it,” says Frederico Baliña, the Cafeteria’s careworn manager, surveying his lone customer. “We use some of the money from the summer to keep going in the winter and keep up our local client base.”
