Speculation on Barack Obama's choice for Treasury secretary centres on three names: Lawrence Summers, former Treasury secretary, Tim Geithner, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and Paul Volcker, the former Fed chairman, writes Krishna Guha in Washington .

Mr Summers is well respected by the Obama campaign and has played a central role in shaping the Democratic party's response to the credit crisis.
