China: Nation’s seafaring skills resurface

When modern China puts its mind to a new task, it rarely does things by half measures. A decade ago, there were hardly any privately-owned yachts in the country. But in the city of Xiamen, a popular tourist area on the south-east coast, developers have started building what will be the largest marina in the country.

When it opens next year, the Xiamen dock will have berths for 600 boats. And according to Fang Dongluo, chairman of the club that will run the marina, by 2011 the project will have hotels, office buildings and a beach-side commercial street.
