Evolution of ETFs 'hits critical mass'

Total global exchange traded fund assets are growing rapidly. This year they passed $700bn (€484bn, £337bn), and are expected to pass $2,000bn by 2011, making the sector a highly attractive one for asset management firms.

However, as more companies launch ETFs, the sector has become increasingly crowded and competitive. The number and diversity of ETFs is growing at a dizzying rate, with almost every theme, sector and region being mined for possible products.
