Dubai has a hot and difficult climate. It is situated in a desolate and uninviting desert and has modest human and natural resources.

Forty years ago, Dubai was more like a village in the middle ages. Its 60,000-plus population lived a miserable life not very different from the lives of millions currently living in shantytowns around the world.
