Brown still supports Blair as EU president

Downing Street on Sunday rejected reports that Gordon Brown had given up on Tony Blair’s attempt to become the European Union’s president, and had instead switched his attention to sending David Miliband, foreign secretary, to Brussels.

Mr Miliband denies being a candidate for the post of EU foreign policy chief and Mr Brown’s aides insisted the prime minister remained fully supportive of Tony Blair – if the former premier formally puts himself forward for the president’s post.
