US needs ‘new vision’ for trade

The US cannot provide leadership abroad on trade policy until it re-establishes a consensus at home, Max Baucus, the Democratic senator, said on Tuesday in a speech criticising some within his own party.

The chairman of the Senate committee overseeing US trade agreements blasted domestic “political leaders who play to the audience” and said Democrats needed to reclaim their “progressive internationalist legacy”.
