Carlos Ghosn is a believer in government support for industry. That comes from the emergency help European carmakers have received from government loans to a multi-billion euro cash-for-clunkers scheme.
Mr Ghosn believes that the withdrawal of this help will mean European growth is “very slight” in 2010 at less than 1 per cent and will not be “very strong or vibrant” for several years afterwards. He believes governments will again be ready to step in with further incentives if necessary. “Governments are going to be very careful. If they see any risk of fallback, they will intervene.”
