Free financial advice is good for the professionals too

Like a free lunch, free financial advice is a promise that provokes suspicion. Many people have learnt to mistrust money managers bearing gifts, worried that if the embedded commission doesn’t get them, the next mis-selling scandal will.

This is a caricature. But it still deters many from buying savings, investment or insurance products – even assuming they had considered them in the first place.
