Kiev and Gazprom end standoff

The government in Kiev said yesterday that it had agreed to resume negotiations with Gazprom of Russia after a standoff in which gas supplies to Ukraine - a key transit artery to Europe - were cut by more than half.

Gazprom confirmed the two sides were close to a deal that would see shipments to Ukraine resumed at full volume.
