Chinese media open up in aftermath of chemical spill

The Chinese media was initially slow to grasp the ramifications of the blast at a chemicals plant this month in Jilin, a city in north-east China on the Songhua river.

The blast itself, which killed five workers, was never a secret, sending spectacular fireballs and smoke into the sky, but the contamination of the Songhua river that happened with it was kept under wraps.
