Straw tells Labour MPs to stay calm

Jack Straw, Gordon Brown’s most senior cabinet minister, on Friday tried to quell a growing Labour mutiny against the prime minister as the party went into convulsions following its shock by-election defeat in Glasgow East.

Several cabinet ministers and senior MPs privately urged Mr Straw to lead a coup against Mr Brown in the autumn, unless the premier found a way to lead the party out of its electoral malaise.
