Pakistan on Wednesday strongly criticised a US military airstrike near the border with Afghanistan that officials claimed was responsible for the death of 11 Pakistani soldiers.

Geoff Morrell, the Pentagon press secretary, defended Tuesday’s air strikes as “legitimate”, but said the US was working with the Pakistani government to find out exactly what had happened.
