American Airlines hit by drop in passengers

AMR, the parent company of American Airlines, on Wednesday reported a heavy net loss for the first quarter as shrinking demand for air travel replaced record oil prices as the biggest threat to the airline industry.

The group said its net loss for the first three months rose to $375m from $341m in the same period a year ago as it was hit by declining revenues, fares and traffic.
