Plans for larger private role in NHS

The private sector will benefit from attempts to discourage primary care trusts from running community hospitals and services, potentially opening up a market worth £10bn ($16bn) a year, the Department of Health has calculated.

The plan will create “real opportunities” for the private sector in the National Health Service, Bob Ricketts, the department’s director of system management, said. However, he warned that “the market will take time to develop”.
