Andrew Lansley pre-empted £1.5bn of the National Health Service capital budget yesterday by pledging that under a Conservative government, all patients needing planned treatment would have the opportunity to choose a single room.

The pledge - from a party that insists it will scrap central targets for the NHS - follows Labour's continued struggle to honour a decade-old manifesto pledge to eliminate single sex wards.
