EU states consider UK-style rescue scheme

European governments were on Wednesday considering whether to follow Britain with their own plans for systematic support for banks by providing similar loan guarantees that could help kick-start lending between banks.

Gordon Brown, the British prime minister, said on Wednesday he had presented his European Union counterparts with “proposals for a European funding scheme”. UK officials explained that Mr Brown was urging other governments to follow London and provide billions of euros in medium-term loan guarantees to their banks.
