In the darkness over Thailand, as the country's many exhausted volunteers rested from their grim task of searching for the dead, US air force major Eugene Stein took off from Bangkok in a US military C130 cargo aircraft loaded with rubber gloves and frozen chicken for those in the disaster zone.
A similar US flight earlier in the day had returned with 13 injured survivors of Sunday's sea surge, carrying them away from the beach resort of Krabi.
