Hitachi victory divides rail industry

A furious debate erupted within Britain’s £2bn-a-year rail equipment industry after the government decided to make Hitachi of Japan the preferred supplier for one of the most valuable train contracts awarded in the UK.

Companies in the sector cannot agree on whether the Department for Transport announcement is positive for British manufacturing businesses, many of them in a parlous state as a result of the recession.
