Qatar’s huge gas reserves may have turned the emirate into a leading force on global energy markets but they have also been used to step up its influence on a regional level.

Countries in the Gulf are experiencing strong economic growth and require ever-increasing volumes of gas for industrial development, so they have looked enviously at the vast North Field.
