US eyes ways to accelerate car purchases

The focus of Washington’s efforts to support the US car industry is moving from direct aid for manufacturers to ways to encourage more Americans to buy vehicles.

The change in emphasis is reflected in several initiatives making their way through Congress, even as General Motors and Chrysler prepare to submit detailed plans by February 17 to justify $17.4bn (€13.6bn, £11.8bn) in emergency loans that they have received since December.
