New Zealand PM calls general election

New Zealand will hold a general election in eight weeks time in a battle that pits Helen Clark’s poorly-polling incumbent Labour government against a resurgent National party under John Key.

In choosing November 8, one week shy of the last date possible, Ms Clark hopes the recession-hit country will be enjoying a much needed boost from recently granted tax cuts and lower interest rates.
