Japan’s key policymaker to resign

Heizo Takenaka, the most important influence on the economic policies of Junichiro Koizumi, said Friday he would resign from government, marking the likely end of his political career.

The home affairs and telecommunications minister will quit both his cabinet post and his upper house parliamentary seat on September 26, the day Shinzo Abe is expected to be sworn in as Mr Koizumi’s successor.
