France on Sunday night suffered the worst night of recent riots, with violence spreading and two policemen shot.

The unrest came as Jacques Chirac, France's president, said that restoring public order was an "absolute priority" after an emergency security meeting with senior ministers to address the violent riots that are sweeping through poor urban areas across the country.
